Wheeler's Mines
Trail System: ITS80 to club trails (Wild River Riders)
Wheeler's Mines is a historic mica mining site in Gilead. Today, the site is a popular destination for rockhounds and history enthusiasts, who can explore the old mine shafts and search for minerals and fossils. The area is also known for its scenic beauty, with rolling hills, forests, and streams providing a picturesque backdrop for outdoor activities.
Tip: Start your journey at the park-n-ride on Route 2 in Gilead. Take a left turn from the parking lot and follow the marked trails. After covering approximately five miles, you'll arrive at the first mine, making it an excellent initial stop. Following a counterclockwise loop is recommended, as the trail is designated as one-way. As you ascend the trail, you'll enjoy breathtaking views of the Mahoosuc mountain range and Bethel, Maine's most picturesque mountain village.
A designated pull-off area for sleds offers a convenient spot to take a break, and a short walk from the trail brings you to the first mine, renowned for its abundance of blue ice. Continue along the one-way trail until you reach Wheeler's cabin. Take a moment to soak in the panoramic views, and then circle the cabin to discover an even larger ice cave. If the water is frozen, you can explore the interior, but exercise caution and refrain from walking beneath hanging or dripping icicles.
